Much of Chatham County is still very rural.  North Chatham is changing every day with new shopping centers and upper price range neighborhoods under development and planned. The test scores vary across the county. In the North Chatham area the scores compare favorably with the rest of the Triangle. If you focus on the North Chatham schools,  Perry Harrison and North Chatham Middle and Elementary you will see that they are similar to the scores of the Chapel Hill schools which have the reputation as the best in the state.  A new high school is planned for North Chatham in the next few years.  North Chatham School Test Snapshot Chatham County ABC's Test Scores Pittsboro, the County Seat Pittsboro is a charming small town with a round about circling a central courthouse. Antique shops, a vintage clothing store, craft gallery and general store add charm and make it a Saturday destination. The county government offices are located there and it's wonderful to experience the home town values and consideration that is missing in larger cities. Jordan Lake Map of Jordan Lake Man made, planned by the Army Corp of Engineers, in the late 1960's, Jordan Lake's 46,768 acres are not only a popular source of recreation. They also provide the water supply for surrounding cities, flood and water quality control, and fish and wildlife conservation.  The convenient location of the lake and the nine recreation sites in the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area make it easy to launch your boat, swim, fish, camp and spend time with the whole family. It's so nice on a long summer day to come home from work, put the boat in the water and just cruse around and maybe drop a line in the water for a few hours before sunset. A privately owned marina rents boats and pontoon boats. There are several boat storage areas close to the lake and the golf neighborhood, The Preserve at Jordan Lake, has a boat storage lot for owners.  Another popular activity around the lake is bird watching. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is one of the largest summertime homes of the bald eagle. Several times a year on clear nights Astronomers from UNC's Morehead Planetarium  hold an Astronomy Viewing Session. They share their telescopes and knowledge of our night sky. It could be a look at the planets and moon or a spectacular meteor shower. Art in Chatham Chatham has long been know as a special place for art and artists. The beauty of the land and the rural feeling provides inspiration and the location close to galleries, cities and 3 major Universities provides resources and venues for shows.  The Chatham Arts Council    holds an open studio tour and juried art show during the first two weekends of December.The community can visit visual artists in their studios ask questions and buy their work. It's a self guided tour and great fun. I always shop for Christmas presents and love picking out gifts for my family and always something for me.
